"I've been a fairly good exerciser most of my adult life. Not very consistent in a particular approach, but I generally kept at it in some form or another. Then, a few years ago, I went through a really tough time and one result was that I went into a real exercise slump.

Now, my primary goal is to improve the quality of my life - how I feel in my body and about myself. I figure any loss of weight or inches will be a bonus. When I first started working out with Margo in 2002, I weighed 320 pounds. I was prediabetic, had high cholesterol, and was constantly tired. I had a bad back and bad knees. All the things we associate with middle age-except I was 17. My doctor told me that, if I did not immediately begin to lose weight, I would soon develop full-blown diabetes; if I developed diabetes and still did not lose weight, I would be facing complications such as blindness and gangrene within ten years. There's never a right age to go blind or to have one's foot amputated, but 27 is definitely too young. Because I was considered morbidly obese (more than 100 pounds overweight), my insurance would have covered weight-loss surgery, but I decided to give the old-fashioned way a try first, and I'm glad I did.

I was nervous before I went to my first appointment. I had not engaged in regular exercise since 6th grade PE and doubted my ability to stick to an exercise program, especially as I had tried and failed at dieting all throughout middle school. My doubts were put to rest as soon as I got on the treadmill. I immediately found Margo easy to talk to, and before I knew it I had walked for 20 minutes straight. From there, I moved on to lat pulldowns and was shocked and amazed to see that I was capable of moving weight in the double digits. That first workout was incredibly encouraging. I stopped questioning my ability to take control of my weight.

I continued to work out with Margo throughout the spring and summer of 2002. The changes in my body from exercise motivated me to begin tackling my issues with food and diet. I lost 20 pounds and a clothing size, but more importantly, my knees and back stopped hurting, and my blood sugar and cholesterol numbers decreased markedly.

I started college at St. Ed's in the fall of 2002. Unfortunately, my busy schedule during freshman year made it impractical to continue training in Bee Caves, and I started working out on my own at a gym near campus. However, during the short time I trained with her, Margo managed to instill in me a love of exercise, a quality I had previously thought myself incapable of attaining. I was able to stick to a workout schedule on my own, and have done so ever since.

I went on to lose an additional 165 pounds, bringing my weight down to 135. My blood sugar and cholesterol long ago retreated into the healthy range. My back and knees no longer give me trouble. Most importantly, I look and feel my own age. I would not have been able to accomplish this if Margo had not showed me that exercise isn't a punishment and can actually be a pleasure.

"I have a good friend who was seeing Margo so she came highly recommended. I had just lost around 10 pounds which I accomplished by diet and a lot of walking. I was looking to introduce some strength training into my routine mainly because I wanted to further lower my cholesterol and maintain my bone density. My cholesterol had always been fairly normal without medication and I wanted to keep it that way but I had a “slight” decrease in my bone density and had heard that strength training could help.
